F not F v2 is the second version following the experimental composition F not F v1
Extending the idea of working to transmit the concept of togetherness between remote musicians playing together over the internet, the concept of this piece takes a further step and not only classifies what musicians are playing but also determines if they are playing them at the same time. The musicians are presented with 5 initial phrases, each to be played by a solist and the others to provide texture. As the solist decides to play the phrase that the machine is trained to detect, the score begins to expose that phrase to the other musicians. Gradually, all musicians play the phrase and that section comes to an end, and another begins with a new solist.
Python machine-learning code was created in cooperation with Muhammed Umer Javaid
The score was created in Javascript by Adam Biagianti (source available on Github).
Conference paper, Towards Responsive Scoring Techniques for Networked Music Performances
For the performance in this recording, the musicians were in two separate rooms and the audience could move between rooms, or stand in between them and hear both halves of the ensemble. The result was a rather special networked performance where the audience could experience both spaces, while the musicians were connected by way of the intelligent score.
Composed for Elision Ensemble. Performed by Elision ensemble at TENOR conference, Melbourne, Australia, July 27th 2019.
